Improving employee sleep hygiene and health

Chronic stress is a significant occupational health and safety issue. Discover how you can utilise digital technologies to improve employee health and wellbeing.

Poor sleep is a significant risk factor for chronic disease, injury and poor job performance – improving sleep quality, duration and hygiene is a key step towards increasing overall health and wellbeing.

The impact of poor sleep hygiene on employee performance is costly for employers and insurers. Inadequate sleep and/or disrupted sleep are also one of the modifiable predictors of and contributors to chronic health problems among employees, generating significant avoidable costs for employers.

Sleep impacts mental health, incidence of fatigue, burnout and exhaustion, and decreases workplace productivity by $1,300 to $3,000 per employee.

Assessing and improving sleep hygiene and duration are central objectives for wellteq when implementing employee wellness solutions and challenges for clients. One method wellteq utilises for improving employee sleep hygiene involves a Sleep Week program, where participants log their nightly sleep duration for at least five out of seven days a week. This data is captured and reported automatically by a wearable device (Garmin, Fitbit, Apple Watches) or self-reporting in the wellteq app.
